GET YOUR PHIL: Dinner and a Show Series from the LA Philharmonic

In LA Activities, LA Guide by LA Travel Magazine

LA Philharmonic has joined with several exciting eateries downtown to make your night out even better. On select nights through April, ticket holders can enjoy an exclusive multi-course pre-fixe menu at specially selected downtown restaurants for only $25.

We recently attended the first evening of “Get Your Phil”, dining at CHAYA, who has just celebrated their 5th year serving up Japanese fusion. Blessed by the Southern California weather, we dined on their beautiful outdoor patio, sipping wine and soju cocktails from their extensive list. Menu options were difficult to choose from, so we made sure to share. First course was a Tri-Color Caesar Salad with Pomegranate and Spiced Butternut Squash Soup, both lovely and light. The main course followed with perfectly tender Grilled Flat Iron Steak drizzled with Cafe de Paris Sauce and a refreshing and filling Soy Glazed Alaskan Cod. For dessert we dug in to a rich Flourless Chocolate Cake. With that, CHAYA proved to us yet again why they have become such a downtown staple.

A short walk from CHAYA brought us to stunning Disney Hall, where any seat in the house is a good seat, to catch LA Phil’s Happy Birthday, “Hurricane Mama”. Conducted by world renowned Esa-Pekka Salonen, we traveled to far off lands in our imaginations to the sounds of Leos Janácek’s Sinfonietta. The ‘happy birthday’ came in full force as Oliver Latry stepped away from his usual gig at Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris to regale us with the U.S. Premiere of  the spectacularly surreal Maan Varjot (“Earth’s Shadows”) on Disney Hall’s aptly impressive organ. After a short intermission, we were deeply moved by the Lemminkäinen Suite, a collection of four symphonic poems from Jean Sibelius, which was masterfully performed by the orchestra.

Continuing in the “Get Your Phil” series is a delightful list of participating restaurants and two scheduled performances slated for 2015:
