Small Bites, Big Views

In Dining by Leslie Moore

The foodie scene is ever evolving around the globe; it can be a challenge to keep up with the hottest restaurants and dining trends. So where should you go to try the newest dish on the block? Here are a few delicious places you need to check out this season.

Restaurantes Bismark, La Paz, Mexico

When in La Paz there are two things you must do: swim with the gentle giants, (the whale sharks) and enjoy a late afternoon meal paired with margaritas at Restaurantes Bismark.  This funky open air establishment is located on the Malecón in La Paz, so the people-watching is on point. Choose from a variety of lobster, shrimp and fish tacos, and prepare to have your palate pleased.  To our surprise, the fish arrived naked on house made corn tortillas and we were directed to a vast salad and salsa bar where we found an assortment of fresh salsas for every taste, made with the most delectable ingredients and many that we had never experienced before. The rustic flavors were to die for.  We piled our plates so high that we were unable to fold our tacos. This is certainly one of the best traditional Mexican meals we have experienced to date! Oh, and don’t forget to wash it all down with a refreshing lime margarita! We guarantee this is a meal you will be raving about for a long time.

Zaytinya, Washington, DC

A trip to DC without a visit to Zaytinya is simply unimaginable.  Zaytinya is just one of celebrated Chef Jose Andres’ incredible dining experiences. This casual, contemporary restaurant with community tables serves up modern mezzes that tantalize the senses.  Beyond the Hommus, Labneh, Baba Ghanoush (a must at every meal), you will find a large selection of Mediterranean inspired seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. There are too many favorites to mention, but if you are someone who hails from Greece, Turkey or Lebanon, your meal will bring back memories of home. This menu is better explored with a large group as all dishes can be shared so bring your friends, pull up a chair and order extensively from a varied and innovative menu. The staff is knowledgeable and will adeptly guide you through the delicious offerings and extensive wine list. This establishment will not disappoint and you will quickly learn why this is a favorite amongst the areas elite!

Amada, Philadelphia, PA

The best advice I could give to anyone traveling to Philadelphia is to book a table at Amada.  Their menu boasts a wide range of mouthwatering tapas that bring an innovative take to this traditional style of eating. White Anchovies, Lamb Tartar, Truffle Lavender Honey and Wild Mushrooms are just a few of the unusual suspects on the menu. Opt for the Cochiniloo Asado (roasted sucking pig) or Lobster Paella, both are fantastic! If you are ready to leave your gastronomic adventure to chance, Chef Garces offers a special menu of Andalusian inspired tapas expertly paired with wines that not only enhance but elevate this signature tasting experience.  Philadelphia is well known by way of the Liberty Bell, the Declaration of Independence and Rocky but for me, the City of Love is all about the food!

Merriman’s Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii

Merriman’s features fresh local seafood and island inspired dishes while boasting beautiful sunsets and ocean views.  Situated at the end of the island of Maui, where the ocean meets a craggy rock point, this elegant restaurant is perched on a perfectly manicured private lawn overlooking Kapalua Bay. Guests can choose to dine inside their stunning dining room or outside deck. For those looking for the perfect spot to lounge, the open-air bar is an ideal option to watch the sun setting by the fire pit.

Executive Chef Peter Merriman is known for his unique regional cuisine and farm to table philosophy. Looking for the freshest fish on the island served with locally sourced ingredients? Make the drive to Merriman’s for Kauai Shrimp with Cucumber Kim Chee, Kona Kampachi-Macadamia Crusted, or Merriman’s “It’s Nice to Share” dinner, which changes with the seasons. The view from the restaurant never gets old, a Hawaiian breeze off the ocean is always soothing and an evening at Merriman’s is always memorable.
