Taste on Melrose

In Dining, LA Dining, LA Guide by LA Travel Magazine

The dining scene on Melrose Avenue is long home to stellar ethnic fare, fusion cooking and seems to be becoming the center for restaurants devoted to what might be called the new wave of California cuisine.

Chief among the top neighborhood spots is Taste on Melrose, an extremely chic yet casually trendy place to people watch while enjoying a savory bite to eat.  The restaurant has been around for years probably due to its tasty comfort food and great location. Located in the heart of the posh stretch that is Melrose Avenue, Taste is a local favorite. Stylish trendsetters stop by for a cocktail and peruse the scene from the outdoor patio while tourists dine hoping to spot a celebrity.

The ambiance is light and easygoing, broken up into a loft overlooking the outside patio. It is comfortable, warm and the staff is friendly.  Once we were seated we studied the drink menu and looked for guidance from our server.  With his advice we went with their house specialty the Sangria which was utterly refreshing and a perfect choice to complement the weather.  He also helped us choose two appetizers the White Truffle Oil & Mushroom Mac & Cheese and the Ahi Tuna Tartare with Avocado, Dill, Jicama, Mint, Spicy Aioli and Sweet Soy Reduction paired with a few Crostinis.  The Tartare’s ingredients came together well with just enough Avocado Dill and Spicy Aioli to balance the dish out and create a fresh mix of flavors.

Next up was our entrée selection; it was really difficult to decide with so many enticing options.  I guess we will have to come back to try the items we missed…go ahead twist my arm!

We finally decided on the Crispy Parmesan Chicken Paillard accompanied with Roasted Garlic Potato Purée, Organic Baby Arugula Salad, Red Onion Jam and White Gravy as well as the Short Rib Grilled Cheese Sandwich which was comprised of All Natural Pulled Braised Short Ribs, White Cheddar, Pickled Cucumber Salad, Pommes Frites and Horseradish Dipping Sauce.   Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying.

Insider Tip: If you are a Grilled Cheese Fan (Who isn’t?) then you don’t want to miss Grilled Cheese Night which takes place every Tuesday and offers some great options for even the hardest to please Grilled Cheese Connoisseur.  The thought of the warm crispy bread with gooey cheese on the inside makes me wish every day was Tuesday!
