Cancer sucks. It completely interrupts life, not just for those afflicted, but for their loved ones as well. Walk With Sally is taking great strides to ease the burden for families affected by cancer. The organization provides free of charge counseling for children and siblings of those with cancer, strengthening and giving hope to families who need it most. One child at a time, one heart at a time.
Millions of people are impacted by cancer, but Walk With Sally’s 8th annual White Light White Night event proved that there are many, many people who are dedicated to putting up a fight. In a beautiful, star studded evening in El Segundo, California, people congregated from all over to join together and celebrate hope.
Celebs spotted included Will Svitek of the Cincinnati Bengals who attended in honor of his father who recently passed away from cancer, tweeting that Walk With Sally is “close to his heart”. Anna Trebunskaya, a Dancing with the Stars regular was also in attendance. She lost a close friend to breast cancer at an early age, and has dedicated much of her time to related causes.
An incredible array of silent auction items stretched nearly the entire length of the venue. From personal yoga classes to hotel stays to designer dresses to a signed guitar by Steven Tyler, the donations displayed reflected the huge support of the community. The enthusiastic crowd of supporters, all dressed in white, garnered a record breaking of over $250,000 for the organization’s mentoring services.
John Paul DeJoria of John Paul Mitchell and Patron, was in attendance as a major supporter, contributing to the evening’s libations, ensuring that Patron cocktails flowed freely. We sampled international cuisine and many farm to table initiatives. Inventive menus– sashimi tacos with seaweed salad toppings from Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, whose executive chef, Chris Garasic, admitted that he hasn’t quite found his style yet because he loves all cuisines. I tasted everything he had to offer, and decided his style is simply whatever is delicious, fresh, and unexpected. Petros Greek cuisine, with several locations in Southern California and an enthusiastic staff, wowed us with mouthwatering Keftethes, a traditional Mediterranean meatball. Other vendors of note were Hermosa Beach’s Abigaile restaurant, Tin Roof Bistro, and Rebel Coast Winery.
As the night stretched on, DJs spun music as bartenders smiled and slung tasty drinks. A full stretch limo made for a very unique photo booth with a professional photographer directing glamorous subjects. After a touching film about Walk With Sally’s positive impact on children and their families, Berlin dominated the crowd with an electric performance.
We applaud all that Walk With Sally does and will continue to do for families in the upcoming year and look forward to the 9th Annual White Light White Night event!
